The 25th anniversary of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope on Flickr

Hubble is a remarkable telescope and one of NASA’s most successful and long lasting science missions that has provided both scientists and the public with dazzling images of deep space. It is also the only observatory designed for on-orbit maintenance and repair. Many Hubble discoveries might not have been possible without this forethought. Engineers and astronauts logged hundreds of hours in underwater training facilities to ensure Hubble was designed for repair in space and to practice for the deployment and repair of the observatory. Engineers even devised and tested new tools needed for the Hubble servicing missions. These images represent just a portion of the hard work that was completed by NASA and its international partners to build and maintain the Hubble Space Telescope, truly one of the world’s greatest observatories.
